Nicolás Córdoba

Founding Partner

Nicolás is a founding partner of JCD and focuses his practice on international investment and commercial arbitrations involving Latin American parties. With over 10 years of experience, he has advised and represented numerous clients in more than 26 international disputes.

He has particular experience in the mining, oil and gas and telecommunications sectors, as well as in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues.


Before founding JCD, Nicolás was a partner at Adell & Merizalde, a leading Latin American international arbitration firm, and a senior associate at an international firm based in Washington DC. He also worked at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), was an advisor on international affairs at the Attorney General's Office in Bogotá, and gained additional international experience at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg.


Nicolás is admitted to practice law in Colombia and is a Special Legal Consultant in the District of Columbia. He earned his law degree from Universidad del Rosario (Colombia), holds a Master of Laws degree from Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain), and an LL.M. in International Legal Studies from Georgetown University Law Center (Washington, DC), both with highest honors. He is also a member of the International Coalition for Animal Protection (ICFAP).

Experience
ICC Arbitration Concerning the Assessment and Collection of Mining Royalties

Confidential client

Represented two international mining companies in an ICC arbitration against a Latin American State concerning the State's allegedly arbitrary and inconsistent conduct in the assessment and collection of royalties.

ICDR Arbitration Concerning Telecommunications Infrastructure

Confidential client

Represented a telecommunications tower developer in a multi-party ICDR arbitration seated in New York against a financial institution concerning the performance and enforcement of an agreement for the development of telecommunications infrastructure in Latin America. Amount in dispute exceeded US$150 million.

Estructuración y financiamiento de un proyecto portuario en Urabá

Asesoría a las sociedades PIO S.A.S., Puerto Bahía Colombia de Urabá S.A. y Puerto Antioquia Holding S.A.S. en el marco regulatorio de concesiones portuarias y en diversos asuntos contractuales relacionados con el Proyecto, incluyendo su financiamiento (deuda senior, deuda mezzanine e inversión de capital), la redacción y negociación de acuerdos de off take con clientes clave, contrato de ingeniería del propietario, asuntos relacionados con el contrato EPC, instalaciones de graneles secos y acuerdos de construcción de líneas eléctricas, operación mantenimiento con y diversas contrapartes, asuntos ambientales, de tierras, incluidos complejos procedimientos de restitución y expropiación de tierras que involucran a varias entidades públicas, asuntos sociales, protección de datos, asuntos laborales, entre otros.
