Nicolás is a founding partner of JCD and focuses his practice on international investment and commercial arbitrations involving Latin American parties. With over 10 years of experience, he has advised and represented numerous clients in more than 26 international disputes.
He has particular experience in the mining, oil and gas and telecommunications sectors, as well as in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues.
Before founding JCD, Nicolás was a partner at Adell & Merizalde, a leading Latin American international arbitration firm, and a senior associate at an international firm based in Washington DC. He also worked at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), was an advisor on international affairs at the Attorney General's Office in Bogotá, and gained additional international experience at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg.
Nicolás is admitted to practice law in Colombia and is a Special Legal Consultant in the District of Columbia. He earned his law degree from Universidad del Rosario (Colombia), holds a Master of Laws degree from Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain), and an LL.M. in International Legal Studies from Georgetown University Law Center (Washington, DC), both with highest honors. He is also a member of the International Coalition for Animal Protection (ICFAP).

Represented three international mining companies, their local joint venture and their international trading company in a complaint filed before five National Contact Points of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) concerning alleged breaches of social and environmental obligations under international law.
Investment Dispute Concerning an Environmental License for a Mining Project
Confidential client
Represented an international conglomerate and its local mining company in a notified investment dispute against a South American State arising from measures adopted by the State in connection with the environmental license for a mining project. Amount in dispute exceeded US$500 million.
Investment Claim against Venezuela in the Dairy Sector

Represented four investors in an investment claim against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela arising from measures adopted by Venezuela that affected the claimants' investments in the dairy production and distribution sector. Amount in dispute exceeded US$800 million.
